Genoa in a Few Hours: A Walking Itinerary Before Your Cruise
Arriving in Genoa before a cruise and you have a few hours to spare? Porto Antico is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Stazione Marittima, and the old town starts right where the waterfront ends: close enough to cover on foot without rushing back to the ship.

Start at Porto Antico: Genoa's waterfront
Porto Antico, Genoa's waterfront, is a short walk from the Stazione Marittima. The area was redesigned in 1992 by architect Renzo Piano, who was born in Genoa, for that year's Columbus celebrations marking 500 years since Columbus's voyage.
Even without time for a full visit, you'll pass close to:
• Genoa Aquarium, one of the largest in Europe, with a facade worth seeing even from outside
• Biosfera, Renzo Piano's glass sphere housing a small tropical ecosystem
• Bigo, the panoramic lift shaped like a harbour crane, which raises visitors above the water for a view over the port and the old town
• Città dei Bambini e dei Ragazzi, an interactive science space for children, useful if you're travelling with kids

Five minutes from Porto Antico, the Caruggi open up: Genoa's medieval street network, one of the largest and best preserved in Europe, lined with food shops, artisan workshops and small squares. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black-and-white striped facade, sits along the way.
A further 5-10 minutes brings you to Via Garibaldi, home to the Rolli Palaces. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries by Genoa's wealthiest families, 42 of these palaces were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco, two of the grandest, are now museums open to visitors.
Reach Spianata Castelletto

Spianata Castelletto is a terrace above the old town, reachable by a public lift from Via Garibaldi. From here you see the rooftops, the harbour and the sea in one view. If your timing allows it, the city lights start coming on around sunset.
Try Genoa's focaccia
Genoa's focaccia is different from the version you'll find elsewhere in Italy: thicker, oilier, dimpled with fingertip marks and often studded with rosemary or onion. Grab a slice from a bakery on your way back to the port.
Extra: visit Boccadasse

If your schedule allows extra time, Boccadasse is worth the detour:
• From the Stazione Marittima: about 20 minutes by car or taxi
• From Genova Piazza Principe station: about 30 minutes by public transport (bus lines from the centre)
Boccadasse is a small fishing village with colourful houses, a pebble beach and a slower pace than the city centre. It works well as a last stop before heading back to the ship: a coffee by the water, or a few photos on the breakwater.
Porto Antico, the Caruggi and Spianata Castelletto alone are enough to fill a few hours without rushing back to the ship. If you have more time, Boccadasse is worth the extra trip.
