What to Do in Bari Before Your Ferry: How to Spend a Few Hours
If you have a few hours before your ferry from Bari, you can leave the port and reach the historic centre on foot. Bari Vecchia, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the seafront and the Swabian Castle are all close enough to combine in a short visit.
The important detail is to check where your ferry actually boards. Bari's passenger port has several ferry berths, including Molo San Vito and Banchina Dogana, so the walking time from your ship or check-in area can vary. Molo San Vito is used for ferries to extra-Schengen countries.
If you are travelling as a foot passenger and have around two hours, Bari Vecchia is the simplest place to start.

Bari Vecchia: the Basilica, old streets and the seafront

Start with the old town and walk towards the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. The historic centre is compact, so you can see the Cathedral of San Sabino, the basilica and several of the narrow streets around them without needing public transport.
The Basilica of Saint Nicholas was built between 1087 and 1197 and houses the relics of Saint Nicholas. The relics were brought to Bari from Myra in present-day Turkey in 1087. The connection with Saint Nicholas is also why Bari is closely associated with the figure behind the modern Santa Claus tradition.
From the old town, continue towards the waterfront. The Lungomare gives you a short stretch of open space by the Adriatic before you head back towards the port.
Allow around 1–2 hours for Bari Vecchia, depending on whether you stop inside the churches or simply walk through the area.

Swabian Castle: one hour for Bari's medieval history
The Norman-Swabian Castle stands at the edge of Bari Vecchia, so it is easy to add if you have more than two hours.
The first castle was founded under Norman rule in 1131. Frederick II later rebuilt and expanded it in the 13th century, and parts of his intervention are still visible in the entrance area and the vestibule. Today the castle contains museum spaces and the Gipsoteca, with plaster casts of medieval sculptures.
Allow about one hour for the visit.
The current full admission price is €10. From April to September, the castle is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00. From October to March, it is open Tuesday to Saturday and on the first Sunday of the month from 9:00 to 19:00; other Sundays are 9:00–13:30. The last admission is one hour before closing.
If your ferry leaves on a Monday, the castle should not be part of your plan.
Street food in Bari Vecchia: orecchiette, focaccia and panzerotti
Bari Vecchia is also the easiest place to fit in something to eat without sitting down for a long meal.
On Strada Arco Basso, you can see fresh orecchiette being prepared by hand in the street. Bari's traditional quick food also includes focaccia barese, panzerotti and sgagliozze, slices of fried polenta commonly eaten as a snack.
You can combine a short food stop with your walk through the old town rather than setting aside a separate meal.
Allow 30–60 minutes if you want a quick snack before returning towards the port.
Via Sparano: a short stop if you have extra time
If you still have time after Bari Vecchia, walk towards Via Sparano, Bari's main pedestrian shopping street.
It is more useful as a short stop than as a separate sightseeing destination. The street connects the central shopping area with the rest of the city, with cafés, shops and places to stop for a drink or gelato.
Allow 30 minutes to one hour.
If you are travelling with luggage, keep in mind that the ferry port is the priority once your boarding window approaches. Do not treat the estimated walking time as your boarding buffer.
How to spend your time before the ferry
If you have around 2 hours
Stay in Bari Vecchia.
Walk through the old town, see the Cathedral and Basilica of Saint Nicholas, stop for focaccia or another local snack and continue towards the waterfront.
If you have around 3 hours
You have enough time for Bari Vecchia plus ClueGo, provided the timing of your ferry allows it. The ClueGo trail itself takes 2–3 hours without breaks, so it is better suited to a longer window than a strict two-hour stop.
If you have half a day
Add the Swabian Castle and take more time for Bari Vecchia and the waterfront. You can also fit in Via Sparano if you want to see part of the modern centre.

The port has several passenger facilities, and the correct route back depends on your ferry and boarding point.
